Clinical Evaluation of Methoxyflurane(Penthrane) Inhalated during Labor

Abstract
Most analgesics used in parturients have many disadvantages such as fetal and maternal cardiorespiratory depression and poor uterine contractability etc. An inhalating anesthetic, methoxyflurane(Penthrane), and ethyl-methyl ether was clinically evaluated on 37 nulliparous and 28 multiparous women in the second stage of labor.
The gas was inhalated through analgizer which was designed to produce conscious analgesia on patient demand. The induction time was about 5.5 minutes and the recovery time was about 4. 0 minutes.
The analgesic effect was. satisfactory in almost all cases during-labor and repairing episiotomy wound without prolongation of delivery course. During and after the use of this agent, patient cooperation¡¯s were good and there were no significant untoward reactions as well as no remarkable alterations in maternal blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate and, fetal heart tone.
More comfortable and painless delivery was experienced in about 90% of multiparous women compare to previous delivery, and there was not a case who didn¢¥t want the next use.
